in fact, we can see that China is leading the transition off fossil fuels while growing its industry

This might be a rare case where blockhain actually makes sense. You want a public ledger that's not owned by any single entity, and that's basically what blockchain is.

lol right

Exactly, people running the industry want to make as much profit as possible which translates into producing as little as possible at the higher cost possible.

Given the levels of deindustrialization and the fact that the US is struggling to supply basic things like artillery shells for Ukraine, I think they legitimately are having production issues. It's one of those cases where two things can be true independently of each other. The MIC wants more money, and it's also extremely inefficient.

NATO is the organization that's responsible for most of the invading since the fall of USSR last I checked.

Especially given that the whole Cuban missile crisis happened. It's not theoretical, we know how the US reacts.

I'm pretty concerned with where things are headed as well. We're rapidly moving towards a new cold war with the western countries rallying around the US against the rest of humanity. On top of that, there are mounting problems within western countries themselves, which leads to rising internal tensions. I just can't see how any of this ends well.
For my part, I've been learning Mandarin for the past two years, and I'm seriously considering moving to China at this point. Uprooting my life to move half way across the world is not something I really want to do, but I also increasingly feel that the west is moving in a direction that's antithetical to my values and beliefs. Even if I'm personally comfortable living here, I just can't feel happy living in such a society.

Indeed, it's like if you found out that your grampa was a serial killer and said oh well yeah he murdered some folks, but he's still my grampa. It's just incomprehensible for somebody who's not an utter psychopath to say.

If I’m reading this right this won’t account for impacts of the pandemic and the burdens of long covid, as the data was taken from 2002 to 2020. I imagine numbers are likely to get revised upwards.

Absolutely, and this kind of fundamental research can only really be accomplished with state level commitment. Even in the west, much of the research into computing tech was publicly funded initially before it was handed over to the companies.

Yeah, there are definitely a lot of challenges ahead, but these do seem like tractable problems. It's also worth noting that we're basically reaching the limits of what silicon can do now, and photonic chips would have a lot of optimization potential for decades to come.

I'm sure scaremongering is the point of the article. That said, I have no doubt that China is able to put together a better intelligence network than the US.
