There's no doubt that US sizes have become more generous. Size measurements have increased over the years by about 2 inches. A size 10 from the 50's fits like a size 8 today. A medium shirt is closer to a large from 70 years ago.

We won't have a clear winner. No matter which candidate "wins", there will be widespread allegations of voter fraud. There will be protests. Biden will declare a national emergency. What happens after that? I don't know. But I am prepared for major social unrest.

A large number of people from both major parties are absolutely unwilling to accept a win by the opposing candidate. I've never seen the country so divided.

Electronics are pretty reliable. Cheap mechanical parts are not. High end systems are be able to withstand the rigors of setup and takedown, dusty environments, and frequent transportation. If you keep a cheap mixer indoors and cover the controls with a dropcloth to minimize dust, it should last quite a while.

Aircraft are generally not required to accept surrender unless it is apparent that the surrendering soldiers have removed themselves from the conflict (disarmed) and are headed toward your lines (intent to give up). Even then it's a judgment call if the aircraft is incapable of escorting them to nearby ground troops who can accept their surrender and take them into custody. That's why you see videos of unarmed soldiers making the surrender gestures and they still get taken out by the drone. They're too far behind enemy lines to facilitate taking them prisoner.

I snipped the antenna lead from the cellular modem on my Hyundai. No more built-in road assistance, remote start, or emergency unlocking, but I then never signed up to pay for those features. The car can't phone home anymore. I connect my phone to the infotainment system to allow navigation, and the phone has an Internet DNS filter that prevents connections to Hyundai's servers.

That will have to suffice until we get full digital privacy rights.

Cheap works for non-professional projects. I've used Behringer, Alesis, and other inexpensive mixers for sound systems. The tradeoff is cheap generally means you might be replacing the board in 5-10 years. The Alesis mixer lasted about 6 years before the pots got noisy. My karaoke system is a mid-range 16-channel board, and it's going on 15 years trouble free.

If all you need is to set the levels and parameters then leave them alone, cheap will work. If you're making changes while recording or performing, cheap will eventually fail you.

  • Instead of having customers donate a dollar and giving them a coupon book "worth" $30, why doesn't KFC just donate those $30 themselves (or even half)?

Coupons often say "Cannot be used with any other offer. One coupon per customer per visit." There's usually still an overall profit on the entire order because people don't buy just the one item covered by the coupon. The business can also deduct the value of the coupon as a charitable donation.

Don't know what's up with lemmy.world not showing all the comments, so I hope it's not a big deal that I'm not replying to each comment.

The federal government has a tax credit for 30% of the cost of a heat pump water heater or heat pump A/C. These mostly run on 120v, because 1200W of power consumption yields about the equivalent of a 4000W resistive element heater. The drawback is that in a lot of homes, the 120v powering the gas heater is not a separate circuit. In my mom's house it comes off a wall outlet that also power the kitchen. So if she makes coffee when the water heater is operating it pops the circuit breaker.

Most homes with gas appliances would require new wiring to use electric equivalents. Hiring an electrician for that job can easily top $2000. People on fixed incomes will have a rough time making this change. Those in rural areas are particularly impacted because they typically rely on propane or they're off-grid.

Let folks replace what they already have. Updates should only be required when the property changes hands. Otherwise it creates a lot of resentment and often financial hardship. And the legislation is easy to defeat if you live next to the border. Buy your replacement gas appliance in Nevada or Arizona. This kind of legislation is exactly why people are willing to set aside all the negatives of Trump and vote for him.

There are plenty of companies that will sell your name, email addresses, phone numbers, street addresses, marital status, and relative's names. They obtain the information from publicly sold databases. I had access to one that had all that, plus the registration info for the car I drive, my estimated income, my military record, my driving record, my political party preference, and pictures of my home that had been on the realtor's website.

The scary one was when a phone center employee in the Philippines stole my wife's debit card number and then did two big Western Union MoneyGram transfers to a couple of Filipino men. That means bad actors have access to the credit companies' databases from which Western Union draws their proof of identity questions, like who holds your mortgage, where you lived when you were 10, and the make/model of your first vehicle.

If you're well-off enough to be a financial fraud target, paying a company for identity theft protection is probably well worth it. Put fraud alerts in with all the major credit bureaus too. That usually stops identity thieves from accessing your credit. If you use 2FA with your phone, make sure your telecom provider will not transfer your number to a new device without in-person authorization and authentication.

Don't know why it took them this long. Seems like such a simple thing to mount a gun to a drone. In most of these drone videos, the soldiers are standing, laying on the ground, or running in a straight line. Easy targets for a rifle.

When you shop for a place to live, do you buy/rent nothing because nothing is "perfect"? Or do you weigh the benefits and detriments of each available option and choose the best one?

There's a clear choice, and if you need to see what voter apathy gets you, look at Venezuela. We got a second chance because the Jan 6 attempt failed. If you don't vote, the usurper might win.

Totally agree. Iran can see incoming aircraft and missiles on their radar. There would have been widespread social media reports of the missile flying over the city. These things did not happen. Where's the missile debris? That would have been the lead story on local TV news. Iranian leadership would love to tie the attack back to a missile provided by the US. That would have been their first claim if it really was due to a missile. This story sounds more like Iran belatedly trying to change the narrative.

I don't expect that I will need a gun to defend myself, but I also don't discount the possibility. I'm simply prepared if it happens. We -do- have illegal pot grows, drug addicts, openly racist folks, and Proud Boys. Would you feel vulnerable if you called for help and were told it's 20 minutes away, with no ability to defend yourself?

I sincerely hope I never have to use any weapon against another human, but I'm also a realist. I'm a minority in a mixed marriage. I'm pretty vocal on the local social media where I use my real name. I never confront - I post the counterpoint. Still, I have been threatened. Thankfully, nobody followed through on the threats.

We haven't had a lot of animal attacks on humans. There was a fatal one a few months ago when two brothers were attacked by a mountain lion. One died. They weren't armed.

We do have lots of attacks on livestock. A lion took my neighbor's goats. She's one of the few who don't have a gun in the house. Called 911 when the attack started. It took almost 30 minutes for the sheriff to respond. By then the lion was gone and her 4 goats were dead. Another neighbor shot two coyotes that were attacking his chickens. Still another a mile down the road confronted a lion attacking her llama. She shot near it to scare it off, but her llama died from its injuries. Can't forget the guy who shot a rabid skunk that was chasing him a few years back. He used two magazines before he hit it. I don't live near the ranchers - they don't tend to advertise depredation incidents. But I never hear any of their neighbors complain about predators.

Democrats certainly do want to remove guns from the public. Every attempt at a handgun ban was a Democrat sponsored bill. Never saw such legislation with an exception for "real needs".

  • My friend is a customer service rep who is ready to retire. Her company is talking about layoffs with 13+ weeks of severance, but when she asked (anonymously) if they were accepting volunteers, they said no. In case she's not one of the ones told to clean out her desk, what are the ways she could get terminated while preserving her ability to claim unemployment (which would equal the 13 weeks of severance)? UPDATE: She took my advice and saw her doctor. He agreed that she's experiencing a job-related stress injury, set her up with a Disability claim, and referred her for psychiatric counseling.
