Make him pay it for each entrant. It’s probably still pocket change because a hundred billion dollars (or whatever it is now) is effectively infinite money.

Sometimes the depth of the hole we’ve dug ourselves is just astounding.

But to answer your question, yes. If an unbiased translation is impossible (which it is), the solution is to have versions with as many contradictory biases as possible, so they hopefully cancel each other out.

I work at a bakery. I would love to earn my regular hourly wage and deep clean everything that gets a cursory daily scrub, but they’d need to staff an additional person that day or have me come in overnight.

We’re a comparatively clean bakery, but it’s just not possible to maintain an environment that’s perfect for yeast to grow without also making it a perfect environment for everything else to grow perfectly as well.

They pay me €15/hour which feels like more than I actually need or would expect for the work I do, but I’m trying to work on that. Obviously I contribute more than €15/hour if that’s what they pay me, it’s just almost double what I’ve earned at similar jobs in the US and 2/3 of what I earned there at an insurance company analyzing contracts, so it seems wild to get that for customer service.

Well for me it’s simple, I’ve worked places where we had to destroy food and I just didn’t. I’m lucky enough that it’s always been pretty easy to find another food service job, and I’ve told any managers that I think food waste is the only true sin, and I’m willing to lose my job over it. I know not everyone can afford to walk away from a job, but all of my managers(in two countries) have thus far found a way to look the other way. Your middle manager almost certainly doesn’t want food to be wasted either, so if you tell them it’s a moral issue, that gives them plausible deniability for not destroying it.

We stopped using hive covers because they’re more expensive than the increased mortality. They naturally nest in tree hollows in winter, whose thicker walls (and living material) allow the hive to maintain a higher internal temperature than uncovered hives (or covered hives).

We’ve been keeping them improperly in the winter since the mid 20th century, leading to unnecessary bee mortality within hives. Whether that’s torture or not is up to you, but it’s definitely unnecessary harm.

Does it taste better? Almond flour is over three times the price of marzipan here, so it looks like it would be more expensive to make it myself, but I love marzipan and am down to pay more and put some work in for better marzipan.

I could also just see the prices being different elsewhere, though, given that I’m in Germany and marzipan is a much more common ingredient than almond flour here.

I actually can’t tell, it says they’re credits awarded in $25 increments- I could see that being either vouchers or employer accounts. I still lean towards something like vouchers, given that the increments are roughly equivalent to one meal each and the employees were pooling them, but it would be much more reasonable to do it the way you interpreted it. If they did that, they’d probably even be able to lock delivery to the office address for the majority of employees (I’m sure some people have to travel, but probably a small minority who could be given a different type of account), which would probably naturally cut down on the likelihood that people would misuse it (people obviously still could, but it’s not a good look to leave the office with a bunch of shopping bags, which would likely have a chilling effect).

    Great username, by the way.

I didn’t see anything about meta collecting unspent vouchers. If they are, that’s a good reason, but there’s a not inconsiderable overhead involved in that collection and redistribution/refunding, so I’m not automatically assuming that they are.

Even at $19k/employee/year, this is small potatoes for meta and I would be astounded if they’re honestly doing this for something so petty. A goodwill gesture towards your employees is basically always a good investment.

But I guess they’ll get the best qualified quintile of employees to voluntarily quit, then be left with a bunch of wary, maliciously compliant employees who weren’t good enough to get jobs anywhere else. Not worth it, imo.

But honestly why is that bad? I’m vegan and I work at a bakery. When we get to eat products that I don’t eat, I pass my portion to my coworkers, because obviously. When we made alcohol out of our leftover bread, my observant Muslim coworkers gave us their bottles.

The employees are happier and we actually talk about and get to know the products more (which is the whole point)

His products are overpriced, flimsy, and deceptive, instead of cost effective, long lasting, and simple (this isn’t an ad, this is probably not a comparison they’d invite, but I’m happy to reword this if it feels like too strong a recommendation). He takes the worst parts of religion and distorts them to suit his purposes, instead of using just the best parts of various religions and other writers to try and find a universal message.

[This](bee.ignoble.dev) is a spelling bee clone (or rather a fork, but the dev calls it a clone) that stopped updating a couple of days ago. Has anyone heard anything? It was my favorite version, so I’ll be sad if it’s gone forever. The code for it is public (but I’m 0% tech-savvy and have no idea what to do with that), so it’s also possible that others have clones of it. If anyone knows of any (specifically of this one, not general spelling bee clones), that would also be much appreciated. Edit: I went back through the archives and it’s probably vacation, lol. There’s a week or so missing from the last two summers as well. I am surprised that it’s not automated, and I’ll be supporting the developer as soon as possible, because that’s hella impressive.

Hi, I’m in a classic college crunch, even though I’m fucking 32 and getting my master’s. I have a paper due yesterday and no extension, but I’m hoping they don’t check the mailbox until Monday. Onto the problem: I’m exhausted and fried from too much stress and weed, and too little food and sleep (zero hunger though, plus I’m puking from stress, so… I’m eating soup when I can and starting with good breakfasts). I have to write, but I can’t think because I’m so tired. I can’t sleep because I’m so stressed. I can’t calm down, because I haven’t written the paper. Weed ostensibly helps with the first two but very much not with the third one. I wrote two sentences (the first two in the introduction) in 35 minutes, so trying to push through is… inefficient. What do I do? Edit: I have already discussed and agreed with my fiancé, we’re not buying any more weed at least until I’m done with my studies, so no worries there.

When you look at a picture of three marbles, you don’t have to count them to know that there are three there, your brain just automatically knows that, but you have to count to see whether there are 17 or 18. I remember reading about a study of this for various animals. If I recall correctly, humans can typically recognize 4-5, but can train up to 7 or 8, but crows or possibly an insect have a really high quantity that they can just sense.
