What the hell is this kind of question?

The Taliban didn't cause 9/11. I'm not even sure what your train of logic is.

Al Qaeda caused 9/11 first and foremost. So let's get that part fixed. The Taliban allowed Al Qaeda to stay in Afghanistan, but even the Taliban cannot keep the country under its full control.

Consider that ISIS-K is actively at war with the Taliban right now (and in many ways ISIS-K is the successor to Al Qaeda).

3 miles in a treadmill does not feel like 3 miles on a track or park.

Try it yourself. There's different muscles in my feet that get tired. I'm sure a treadmill is better than no training at all, but if you are aiming for a 5k try to do real walking or running.

Early cryptocoins had the right kind of nerds who cared about solving problems with a strange new digital... thing.

After a few years, the community stopped solving problems and focused on money-making instead. Its a distressing and sad thing to watch, but as it became obvious that Crypto was a ponzi / money making scheme, the nerds and problem-solvers disappeared. Its very demoralizing to see your hard work used for... well... evil. Maybe not the biggest evil but wantonly stealing funds through convoluted tricks and supporting literally black market evils is evil. A lesser evil than murder but evil nonetheless.

There's nothing fundamentally wrong with BTC. Its just technology. But the cryptocoin world has drawn all the evil people to it, to the point that the well-meaning community has collapsed. You only see assholes with BTC these days.

As much as I want to buy into this optimism, I’m having trouble equating Harris’s marginal lead in the average national polls with a comfortable electoral college lead.

Trump can win Nevada, North Carolina, Georgia, AND Arizona but Harris would still win if she gets Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin.

That's a comfortable lead no matter how you spin it. Its a lead, but within the margin of error. So there's work to do, in particular we must now step to the polls and vote. Close this out.

National polls don't matter. Ignore them. Focus on the electoral college maps and the specific states.

    2
  • https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2024/10/14/democrats-trump-harris-election-fears/

Despite all the doom scrolling, Harris has a comfortable lead in the electoral college right now. The time for vibing is over. It's too late to change anyone's opinions (especially because national level events like debates are over). Harris will finish her Media Blitz soon (including a Fox News showing) while Trump retreats into his shell hoping no one notices how damn stupid his mouth is. This is the time for doing. The focus should be on voter drives and other get out the vote pushes. It's mid October, and the October surprises are against Trump and in our favor. It's not the lead we wanted but it's a lead nonetheless. Don't talk yourself out of believing this lead because of a bad poll or two.

CNBC: Why Jeep And Dodge’s Parent Company Stellantis Is Struggling
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kphgNAivs9Y

TL;DR: Stellantis vehicles aren't selling. But its still nice to get a few interviews from a dealership, from CEOs, and other parties involved in Stellantis and talk about what they think is the problem. Its a longer-form 15-minute video, but that's a good thing. (If anything, that's short for what they're trying to cover). This isn't Tesla related directly, but overall car economics / competition is on topic around here. And Stellantis is involved in many EVs, PHEVs, and Hybrids that are cross-shopped with Tesla anyway.

My post above is 376 characters, which would have required three tweets under the original 140 character limit.

Mastodon, for better or worse, has captured a bunch of people who are hooked on the original super-short posting style, which I feel is a form of Newspeak / 1984-style dumbing down of language and discussion that removed nuance. Yes, Mastodon has removed the limit and we have better abilities to discuss today, but that doesn't change the years of training (erm... untraining?) we need to do to de-program people off of this toxic style.

Especially when Mastodon is trying to cater to people who are used to tweets.

Your post could fit on Mastodon

EDIT: and second, Mastodon doesn't have the toxic-FOMO effect that hooks people into Twitter (or Threads, or Bluesky).

People post not because short sentences are good. They post and doom-scroll because they don't want to feel left out of something. Mastodon is healthier for you, but also less intoxicating / less pushy. Its somewhat doomed to failure, as the very point of these short posts / short-engagement stuff is basically crowd manipulation, FOMO and algorithmic manipulation.

Without that kind of manipulation, we won't get the kinds of engagement on Mastodon (or Lemmy for that matter).

Because Threads and BlueSky form effective competition with Twitter.

Also, short form content with just a few sentences per post sucks. It's become obvious. That Twitter was mostly algorithm hype and FOMO.

Mastodon tries to be healthier but I'm not convinced that microblogs in general are that useful, especially to a techie audience who knows RSS and other publishing formats.

After discussing that event before, the rule I settled up on is 'Valid for a newbie to Lemmy'.

Newbies shouldn't be exposed to the nuances to server vs server infighting IMO. But this post while there's an element of it here.... Has enough other benefits that I think it can stay.

This isn't a post I'd put up here, but it doesn't seem to be so server-vs-server focused to trigger my worries for a newbie reader. A newbie probably would see hexbear and not really know the full context (as the post really doesn't focus on Hexbear aside from in passing).

The other post was so egregious it crossed the line for me. But this one is fine and can stay up.

It's not the server vs server part that I'm against. What I am against is the anti-newbie kind of drama that'd turn people away from Lemmy. If newbies are coming here feeling like Lemmy is full of people yelling at each other or making fun of each other's communities, that's a bad thing that I'm worried about.

But this post: I can see where your concerns are. But from the 'Is a newbie going to be disgusted by this' ruling I made before? I don't think so. So that's why this post can stay.

To be fair: I hear that most insurance companies buy a form of 'insurance insurance'.

The insurance-insurance companies are feeling the pinch from Houthis shooting at ships in the sea, Suez Canal mishaps, increased hurricanes and floods, COVID-19 premature deaths for life insurance payouts, etc. Any disaster in the world and these larger insurance-insurance companies pay out to the regular insurance companies.

And we've had a lot of issues recently.

Eventually that means that regular insurance companies (like GEICO) are seeing risks that their source of money is not as safe as it appears.

Super high end cars never were insurable. But to see it happening even at the Cybertruck price point is both an indicator of overall insurance-problems in the world plus how shitty the Cybertruck is.

But this isn't some cheap econo-box he's buying. Its a Tesla, a brand that sees itself as "luxury" (which has always been bullshit btw, but luxury is an opinion and other people's opinions are allowed to be wrong).

No one gives a crap about a Honda or Toyota because everyone recognizes them as econo-shitboxes (ignoring a couple of midwestern "Ford towns" or "GM towns"... the vast majority of the USA doesn't care about Honda or Toyota or Nissan. These are cheap vehicles and everyone knows that).

Its a different story for "higher end" vehicles (or at least, cars that have a higher-end marketing). Tesla at some point was seen as a $60,000+ car (though today depreciation has wrecked that). There's a "dated luxury" feel to this car coinciding with its declining value. People who hold onto it would be seen as not being able to afford to change up to something that actually holds its value.

Elon Musk is... secondary... to the problem at hand here. The issue is that Tesla (yes, run by Elon Musk who has made a lot of bad decisions) has caused Tesla Model Y to decline in value by literally dozens-of-thousands of dollars in just 2 years.

Yeah, don't buy or drop the car because of politics. But... erm... its hard to call an asset that has depreciated this much a luxury anymore. At some point it is embarrassing to keep holding.

Its hard to recommend to sell a car, especially one that has depreciated as much as the Model Y.

You've been forced into a "bagholder" position as Elon Musk sold you on false promises of "appreciating assets", only to see Model Y diminish in value. Selling now will certainly hurt your paper wealth as you realize your losses.

Still, I'd argue that the Model Y never was a good car to being with and your life probably would be appreciably better if you got a better car. Having real Ultrasonics for parking lot situations and real RADAR for lane-centering / highway driving is a must have feature, and I think that Elon Musk's bullshit about "All Vision" is just that, bullshit that only his most blinded fanbois can lap up.

Leaving the cult of Elon and seeing the problems with the car is... hard? I know its a community and all, but there really are better cars out there today than the Model Y. There's a reason why its depreciated so much and its less to do with politics than you might think.

Financially speaking, holding onto the car longer should save you money. So there's that, its very rare that selling a car (especially within 1 or 2 years) is ever a good move, especially after epic levels of depreciation.

You know that Tesla vehicles today (2024) don't have RADAR, Ultrasonic Sensors, left-right turn signals stalks, Heads Up Displays, or Birds Eye View cameras?

For a $40k car, Teslas are.... horrifically behind in technology and extremely cheaply built. A damn Toyota Corolla can get literally more features for driving than a Tesla today.

When we get to high end luxury vehicles like... Hyundai (/s)... well...

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AE1urCK3iMU

Ignore the actual luxury vehicles in the $40k+ market at your own risk. Tesla vehicle buyers today are erm... behind? I dunno how to describe it, like they think they're techno-enthusiasts but every time I talk with them about features from the year 2020+ I feel like they're stuck in Elon Musk's 2015 hype cycle.

That was 10 years ago man. Open your eyes to what's actually available today. This is due to two factors:

    1. Tesla has failed to keep up with technological innovations from other companies (like Toyota or Hyundai. I'm not even talking about real luxury brands either, as massage chairs, Augmented Reality HUD, yadda yadda).

    2. Tesla has actively removed features (like RADAR or Ultrasonic sensors) as they were too expensive for the company to figure out how to deliver during the 2020 chip shortage. As such, today's 2024 vehicles are worse quality and cheaper than 2019 Tesla vehicles.

Tesla is actively moving backwards, while other automakers are moving forwards.

If you are just cheering one side without thinking of the greater political story or the place our little discussion hasnin the world of political issues, you will be too ignorant to truly make lasting change.

Part of that is being honest about the performance of politicians on widely watched debates, and understanding the image projected upon your political opposition.
