State Dept affirms Israel's right to target Hezbollah in Lebanon, urges civilian protection
  • GlassHalfHopeful GlassHalfHopeful 3d ago 100%

This is remarkably helpful in clearing things up. Thank you very much!

With the government of Lebanon allowing Hezbollah this kind of status, it would seem that Israel is not just targeting a terrorist organization but the government of Lebanon itself since it permits and supports Hezbollah as part of its own government.

Considering that most Lebanese don't support Hezbollah, this is even more tragic. Israel continues to lay waste to the country due to the actions of a minority government entity. And it's the Lebanese citizens who are paying the price.

I presumed that this was more lucrative for them and why it's the case...

There's never been a greater need for social entrepreneurial ventures, but they just aren't compatible with capitalistic societies.

Imagine insurance companies there for the benefit of people when tragedy strikes but limiting costs to simply running operations and very limited profit.

Not a single executive with experience would ever want to work at such a place because they would be paid a fraction of what they could at any other company... But goodness it would be incredible for social businesses to become the prevalent model.

The closest I can think of at the moment in the United States is Mark Cuban's Cost Plus Pharmacy. Probably much can be said about his wealth and how he achieved it, but... the pharmacy has been a huge boon for people.

I have to be honest, I'm still a little confused about the relationship of Lebanon's sovereign government and Hezbollah. Are they synonymous? Is that how Israel is able to just lay waste to Lebanon as well without the world screaming about attacks on sovereign territory?

  • GlassHalfHopeful GlassHalfHopeful 5d ago 100%

That's absolutely one of the key reasons the US supports Israel. However, that doesn't mean it can turn a blind eye to what Israel actually does.

The West, especially the United States, has the ability to exert a lot of influence on Israel and yet it seems that they're not trying. Withholding military aid, among other things, goes a long way.

I really wonder what it is I'm missing when it comes to why they won't exert pressure the way it seems they should.

I won't pretend to understand the complexity of this horrific situation. I'm angry and fed up with Israel and the West's relationship with Israel. And it confuses the hell out of me when I see things like this exposé from Bob Woodward that just came out: https://www.cnn.com/2024/10/08/politics/bob-woodward-book-war-joe-biden-putin-netanyahu-trump/index.html

“That son of a bitch, Bibi Netanyahu, he’s a bad guy. He’s a bad fucking guy!” Biden declared privately about the Israeli prime minister to one of his associates in the spring of 2024 as Israel’s war in Gaza intensified, Woodward writes.

“He’s a fucking liar,” Biden said privately of Netanyahu, after Israel went into Rafah, Woodward writes.

“Bibi, what the fuck?” Biden yelled at Netanyahu in July after an Israeli airstrike killed a top Hezbollah military commander and three civilians in Beirut, according to Woodward.

“You know the perception of Israel around the world increasingly is that you’re a rogue state, a rogue actor,” Biden said to Netanyahu.

If this is how Biden privately talks about the guy, I have to wonder what's keeping him from being public about it. I understand this is politics, but I want to hope that there's more to it because the United States and other Western nations sure as hell should not be complicit in the slaughter of Palestinians simply because of politics.

  • GlassHalfHopeful GlassHalfHopeful 2w ago 90%

To mitigate the impact of a second Trump presidency, Nato countries should support the creation of an allied multilateral lending institution, in practice a Nato bank, it says. This could “save nations millions on essential equipment purchases, offer low interest rates on loans to alliance members and introduce a new line of financing with longer repayment timeframes. The bank would be funded with initial subscriptions from Nato members in return for authorised capital stock”.

I won't pretend to understand the financial workings of this. Trump is a menace and NATO leadership has good reason to feel as they do. What that said though, I think this may be a good decision regardless of who wins the presidency.

But the birds — known for their distinctive black-and-iridescent green plumage, bald red head and long curved beak — don’t instinctively know which direction to fly to migrate without the guidance of wild-born elders. So [a team of scientists and conservationists stepped in as foster parents and flight instructors.](https://www.waldrapp.eu/en/) > > “We have to teach them the migration route,” said biologist Johannes Fritz.

However, researchers discovered the tiny birds can double their fat mass in preparation for their Gulf crossing, then expend the entire calorie reserve from fat during the 20-hour non-stop crossing when food and water are unavailable. This is nuts!

cross-posted from: https://lemmy.world/post/13638497 > _A new study of Japanese tits provides the first evidence of non-primate animals using gestures to convey messages_ > > When a mated pair of small birds called Japanese tits arrives at the nest, one of them might flutter its wings at the other. The second bird then typically enters the nest first. This motion might be a signal, meant to convey the message “after you” to the other bird, scientists reported Monday in the journal [*Current Biology*](https://www.cell.com/current-biology/abstract/S0960-9822\(24\)00030-7). > > The research provides the first evidence of animals besides primates using gestures to communicate meaning. The result “shows that Japanese tits not only use wing fluttering as a symbolic gesture, but also in a complex social context involving a sender, receiver and a specific goal, much like how humans communicate,” [Toshitaka Suzuki](https://www.rcast.u-tokyo.ac.jp/en/research/people/staff-suzuki_toshitaka.html), a co-author of the new study and a biologist at the University of Tokyo, tells [*Science News*](https://www.sciencenews.org/article/fluttering-wings-bird-body-language)’ Darren Incorvaia.

**Photo Description** *Top Left*: Tree unbalanced. Left side producing little. Right side producing well. *Top Right*: Shown from opposite side. Full limbs visible without flowering. *Bottom left*: Close up of the left side of the tree. Several branches not flowering down full length. *Bottom right*: Closer view of the graft and up. *Please do ask for any more clarifying photos if you think it would help.* **Questions:** - The tree just started blooming this week. Is it too late to start pruning or should I wait until Autumn? - Pruning the tree is going to make it even more lopsided than it already is. Would you all recommend trimming back the healthy branches so it's not so heavy on one side? - [This website](https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/japanese-weeping-cherry-tree-care/) gives the advice below. Any thoughts otherwise? *Thank you all so much!* ___ **How to Prune a Weeping Cherry Tree** The different types of weeping cherries can grow to between eight and 40 feet tall. Proper pruning keeps these trees looking beautiful and can prevent the development and spread of diseases. Prune while the tree is dormant (no flowers or leaves on the branches) in early spring or late fall. Take the following steps once a year with bypass pruning shears or a pole pruner. - Cut back any branches that contact the ground until they’re at least six inches off the ground. - Remove branches that are rubbing against each other. - Trim back branches that are closer than two inches apart. - Remove dead branches. - Remove stems or branches growing out of the trunk or around the base of the tree (a.k.a. suckers). - Trim back the tips of the branches around the perimeter of the canopy until it’s a balanced, uniform shape. - Remove branches that are growing straight up on grafted cherry trees because they will continue to grow upward instead of weeping down. - Thin out the mangled cluster of branches that often develops near the base of the canopy of grafted trees. - Remove diseased branches as soon as they’re discovered, regardless of the time of year. Sterilize the blade of your cutting tool in between cuts to prevent disease spread.

"Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Sunday that 31,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed in action in the two years since Russia launched its full-scale invasion. "A U.S. intelligence report declassified in mid-December 2023 estimated that 315,000 Russian troops had been killed or wounded in Ukraine. If accurate, the figure would represent 87% of the roughly 360,000 troops Russia had before the war, according to the report." ——— I will never feel as though I fit in this world, a place where the so-called leaders of humanity callously throw away the lives of their own people--slaughtering the innocent along the way--in their own broken, vileness. There is no goodness from such death. We have the ability, today, to be so much more than we have ever been. We can realize the greatest of human potential. Yet we continue to choose death. Had I only been born in a later age where I could spend my one life in an era that is extraordinarily glorious. Presuming of course that our species would survive itself to such a time.
