Hardest job in the world?

Given how big a shitshow the US is, it feels like it's a much easier job than most leaders of state. I'd go as far as to say that if your platform isn't one of complete reform (it never is) it's probably one of the easiest jobs.

Many moons ago I worked briefly on an ad prototype that aimed to replace banner ads, particularly those that sit in content with a single bottom overlay that would "smartly" unobstruct the viewing experience of the page. I was able to reduce a full page of horrible ads into a single box at the bottom of the page that could be closed whenever.

The idea fell completely flat for various reasons, but some off the top of my head:

• We have x advertisers that NEED to be on this page - how can we possibly get x on the page with just one box?
• I don't care if people use ad blockers, let them do their thing and we'll target those that are happy to see ads
• If people can easily close them, the reflex to close will mean no ad is glanced.

The sad stat that came out was that obtrusive ads, the kind that used popups or automatically opened apps to download were VERY effective. I could prove that my ads were several times more effective than "normal" banner ads and popups, but when you could sell 10x the ads it didn't matter if they were 10x more effective.

My brief stint in advertising made me feel that for many years people didn't care about those that blocked ads because there was always more shit to optimise or grow into. That has stagnated, so now the likes of Google are targeting "market share" by getting those that block ads to look at ads again. It won't work, at all, but it feels like they've now optimised themselves into a hole.

This is Lemmy, though. We're not the normal crowd, not even the normal tech crowd. We're the "Hacker News in '07 that laughed at Dropbox because you could just use curlftpfs and source control" crowd. As a general rule, if it's not about Linux or Star Trek lore this place knows nothing.

I don't think you should be downvoted, but where I will disagree is on price. Amazon is rarely the cheaper option nowadays, and more often than not I can find the same product for the same price or cheaper elsewhere.

Where Amazon used to have the market cornered (and still do to some extent) is in logistics. Few companies can easily commit to next day delivery (let alone same day), but that's quickly changing with companies looking to take on Amazon in this market.

As someone that has worked for/with several small companies, including those involved in wellness and promoting mental health, that's a load of shit. Lots of employers are ruthless and evil, including many of the ones people here work for. Amazon is no different, they're just much larger.

As an Amazon employee...the man blatantly lied about the figures for those happy to RTO. He probably got them by seeing that ~10% of corporate staff are in the remote advocacy channel, and assumed that everyone else was...happy?

Regardless, Amazon is known as a place that values data above anything else. If you are a fresh grad PM and you're caught fudging or misrepresenting numbers to suit a narrative, guess what happens to you. You are more than likely PIP'd or fired

I say this as someone that works in AI.

It's all a smoke-screen. It shows that Google (and every other big tech company) is producing super secret, super high tech stuff that should make their shareholders super happy. The reality is that Google and co haven't produced shit for years, have laid off hundreds of thousands of people worldwide, and don't have long term plans to improve outside of enshittifcation.

This isn't news. We've known this for many, many years. It's one of the reasons why many companies didn't bother using LLM's in the first place, that paired with the sheer amount of hallucinations you'll get that'll often utterly destroy a company's reputation (lol Google).

With that said, for commercial services that use LLM's, it's absolutely not true. The models won't reason, but many will have separate expert agents or API endpoints that it will be told to use to disambiguate or better understand what is being asked, what context is needed, etc.

It's kinda funny, because many AI bros rave about how LLM's are getting super powerful, when in reality the real improvements we're seeing is in smaller models that teach a LLM about things like Personas, where to seek expert opinion, what a user "might" mean if they misspell something or ask for something out of context, etc. The LLM's themselves are only slightly getting better, but the thing that preceded them is propping them up to make them better

IMO, LLM's are what they are, a good way to spit information out fast. They're an orchestration mechanism at best. When you think about them this way, every improvement we see tends to make a lot of sense. The article is kinda true, but not in the way they want it to be.

Obviously, Chrono Trigger is an all-time classic with some good endings and character building. I'd recommend that too.

The man spends his time mostly on Twitter, driving it into the ground to simp for Trump. He's taken obscene amounts of money from it, while failing to offer the simplest of products from its roadmap a decade ago - an affordable electric car.

If they don't pivot in the next few years, they'll run the risk of Tesla being leapfrogged to market more than it already has, with an inferior product to practically everyone that enters the EV market.

I still fully maintain that Musk will push Tesla towards making a petrol-powered car within the next few years, so IMO the board needs to get rid before that becomes a thing.

I'm actually on the side of a republic, but the ownership of the royals in the UK is...interesting.

If we were to decide to get rid tomorrow, they don't suddenly not exist. They essentially move into a position where they are more tied to the outcome of Britain than many of our politicians, and the blocker on them holding political opinions is revoked - not that it ever fucking stopped them.

Furthermore, they outright own a lot of land, businesses, and buildings. They would own this if we got rid, and would basically hold enough capital to be multi-billionaires for many generations, if not centuries.

IMO the best thing that the UK can do is chip away at their power, while also reducing them to a point where they make income that is tied to the populace rather than making more money as crown estate custodians. If the people are poor, cut their income or push them towards more marketing of the royals to make money for the country.

Eh, there were a lot of decisions that essentially made it impossible to write a good story for the ending. Just off the top of my head:

• Arya using her Faceless Men training once. She could have probably just paid to kill Walder Frey...
• Zero payoff to the big Targaryan reveal - other than it pissing off Dany
• Why Arya decided to go travelling.
• Bran barely used his abilities. Man could've warged into several beasts and fought during the main battle, and outside of being a moody bitch he doesn't really do anything other than act as bait.
• Who was the legendary lord of light? Was it Jon? It kinda seemed like it, but it makes a lot more sense for Arya to be the one.
• Thematically, it would have made a lot more sense for Jaime to reject Cersei, and for this to be the catalyst for her to go crazy - with Dany going crazy from achieving slow victory that chipped away at her claim.
• Varys was too clever for his story to end like it did. IMO he should have been able to escape his capture, and fled away from Westeros.

Unpopular opinion: The show runners did the best job they could, because with the limited time they had there wasn't really an option for a better ending. They really needed at least another two seasons, but the reason GRRM hasn't written another book is because he knows he's written himself into a corner - and rather than try to fix it through TV and give himself an "out" he criticised the ending he probably had a hand in creating, and won't ever finish the story.

Chrono Trigger is a must for anyone that likes RPG's.

It's sad to say, but there are people that work at Amazon (IC's, not even senior or middle management) that commute by plane.

They were hired on the basis that being 100's of miles away wasn't a problem, and were then told to commute to their nearest office 3x a week (now 5x). For many, spending their money on a commute is preferable to being unemployed, so some employees spend 3+ hours a day commuting, or fly in and get a taxi/train to the office.

It's obviously not to this level, but RTO initiatives make people do stupid shit in order to stay employed...
