Not sure about the modern equivalents to this, but in Rome (please correct if wrong) it used to be like that. Firefighters would only put out fires of houses that paid them and otherwise just stood there, watching.

At least that's what I read in one of those "did you know this about the ancient cultures?" articles and those aren't always reliable either.

Yep, learned about this just yesterday from the YouTube channel BoyBoy who covered the situation quite well and had a lovely interview with Steven (as lovely as such a depressing topic can be)

You see, I at least buy food from my lunch stipend, although it's usually my grocery trip and not necessarily my lunch of the day. And I only get about 7€ lunch stipend per day, not >40€.

Every time I stop thinking that oil companies might be the most evil organizations of the world, I learn about a new atrocity that trumps even the worst thing about them that trumps all i knew before. TL;DW: Chevron likely ordered the murder of one of the family members of the party involved in the case against them. And they not only put the main lawyer in prison, but also revoked his lawyer license and managed to freeze his bank accounts and confiscated h is passport to stop him from continuing the case.

That's a fair gripe with the list. I guess "Top 100 Games" is just more catchy than "100 Great Games In Random Order"

... Although at this point I've seen so many "Top x y" lists that "x Great y In Random Order" would, ironically, catch my attention more.

I fully understand someone thinking x game deserves to be there instead of y but I think this is a great list that spans most genres and serves as a wonderful stepping stone for exploration within gaming.

If I give this list to someone who doesn't know yet, what kind of games they like, this list will show them great games from all major "eras" and all kinds of dev studio sizes/budgets. And once they have played, say, KotoR 2 (since it's in the same list that recommends new and good games like Baldur's Gate 3, they are more likely to check out other old but great games like Gothic 1 and 2 (and, of course, KotoR 1).

I would count Sifu as being pretty linear and very good. Probably the best martial arts fantasy-ish game out there that's single-player (for that but multiplayer take Absolver, the same devs' first game)

    Square Home.

I know the Windows Phone experiment failed but it was my first smartphone that I bought and not just inherited my dad's work-iPhone when it became deprecated. I really love the "live tile" type home screen and Square Home improves on it as well, instead of just carbon copying it.

Other than that, the FUTO keyboard / voice input and Grayjay, although these three technically offer a lifelong free testing period, similar to WinRAR, but even less obnoxious because they don't even remind you that they want you to pay for them.

After 10 or so minutes of inactivity my monitor shuts down (well, screen black, not actually pushing the power button on the monitor).

When I know I'll leave for half an hour or more (and I'm not downloading something big), I hit the physical sleep button on my keyboard. Iunno, not needing to go through a couple clicks on the start menu and instead just pressing two buttons makes me more likely to use it.

Lastly, when I'll be gone for multiple hours (sleeping, working, etc.) and I don't have a huge or particularly slow download, I shut it off. But I never turn off my multi plug rectangle, unless we got a heavy thunderstorm.

Memories once buried have been unearthed...

But really, books already are not the way to make a fortune unless you are in the field of basically being able to dictate what books are used in every educational institution in an entire nation. How would they imagine a pirate, who shares these books, has server upkeep to pay and at best gets very sporadic donations, could afford a lavish lifestyle from this endeavour?

Yeah. The clown award (and similar "derogatory" awards) giving the receiver Steam points is the worst thing that happened to the quality of posts/comments on the Steam forums. The first two comment pages on patchnotes of games like Helldivers 2 are almost exclusively pointfarmers doing their best to reap clown awards.

What is that even supposed to imply? Is it supposed to mean "You're doing something right, if they try to assassinate you"? Well, have they heard about a certainly popular assassination target of the 20th century, Mustache Man? On the other hand, just because someone doesn't actively try to kill you, doesn't mean you're not important. Look at Merkel, for example. Once, a pretty controversial person to have become chancellor and quite important, too.

I absolutely hate it. I understand the reasoning that banning the party would likely result in them just doing their stuff underground in an organization and place that you don't yet have infiltrated with spies, but holy fuck when will something fundamental happen to the AFD? We're dangerously close to repeating history.

And I don't think I can trust on the whole "defensible democracy" thing anymore...

I could be mistaken but I think I read something about being able to choose which games a child member can see and play? If your adult sis is prone to getting banned, just invite her as child, if the system works like that. Sure, the terms "adult" and "child" are more intuitive for regular people, but in essence it's just "admin/mod" and "member", no?

Not sure if there's a better place to ask this. From what I understand, OsmAnd~ is basically a community-run version of the otherwise subscription-based OsmAnd+ To add POIs and make other changes to Open Street Map, I need to log into an editing account of sorts. Will this be fine or could my access to the app get wrecked in some way? After all, I am not subscribed to the "official" service.

Hiya, I hope I'm not completely in the wrong place (/c/Technology seems to only be dedicated to tech news but not questions). I have this powerbank with a built-in solar panel. The powerbank itself seems great so far, but it's a pretty tiny solar panel. I've read about the difficulty of just hooking up a regular powerbank to a solar panel (spikes and dips in voltage due to clouds, people, etc.). But since this powerbank is already designed to be charged with solar energy, can I simply hook a big-ass solar panel onto it and recharge it much faster than the officially displayed "several days, depending on the weather"?

Hey there, I hope question posts are okay. My fiancé and I are planning to turn our Dacia Dokker into this sorta mini camper amalgamation. Do any of you have experience with this sort of endeavor and can offer tricks or insightful knowledge? Edit: I should add that it's supposed to be modular. So luckily (or unfortunately?) I don't need help on how to permanently fix furniture onto the car frame.

I should probably go to bed at this point. I typed up a short story of my arduous attempts at defending an outpost in the STALKER modpack GAMMA and how my game crashed when I turned in the quest. Sent off that post and woe-is-me, the entire text didn't get submitted and I didn't have it saved in copy-paste. It's just so ironically fitting. So ya, what's something you'd like to ramble a bit about?
