Damn that website is probably the most frustrating mobile experience I've had. Demands you use the app, automatically and quickly redirects you to an app store page, then the app store page automatically tries to open in the store application

In dry climates, the water actually will dry itself relatively quickly as long as there's not an overwhelming amount. In more humid areas though, yup.

Early voting is an option in many places too!

Voting early is usually less stressful, and you can schedule it easier (because election day isn't a national holiday for some reason). Look up the dates early voting is running in your county, read up on what polling stations you can vote early at, and make a plan!

As far as changing minds though... yeah, everyone is pretty much locked in at this point. I just hope people in the US cast a ballot even if they don't plan on voting for the president. There are so many downballot positions for local offices that one's vote can have a huge impact on.

I think if people are resigned to not pick between outright vs lite genocide (understandably), the best thing they can do is research their local elections, make a list on who they plan on choosing for each office, and make the decision on the president (including the choice to do a write-in or leave it blank) when they get to the ballot box.

I feel like there's a point to be made about the historical use of the term transracial, which described the experiences of people who were adopted into families of a different race than oneself as a child. In these cases, even though there may be superficial differences present, the culture the person was raised into is that of the adoptive family, and as a result it's what they tend to identify with based on lived experience.

I think there's a difference between idolizing a different race or its culture thereof, and having formative experiences as a member of that community, even if there were indicators that marked you as an "other" both to those within and without. I don't know if it's really worthwhile to tell people how they can and can't feel about their identity in this way, but there are definitely nuances that make racial identity experiences distinct from gender identity experiences.

Without scarcity, artificial or not, the ruling class loses their grip on power. Capital will manufacture scarcity to whatever degree it is capable of, because without it there's even less justification for owners to exist at the top of this neat little hierarchy they desperately cling to. They need to have their gated fortresses and their toys, cleanly separated from the rest of us undesirables.

They'll use AI to bolster the security of their bunkers while drying up the rivers to run them. The whole while, they'll blame any economic decline on the claim that "nobody wants to work anymore" after having automated all the jobs and offering no replacements.

I'd like to believe an alternative is possible. Perhaps we can come together and push for a better future, but that doesn't seem to be the way things are going currently.

I believe the wording is "drinks which burn the throat" which naturally means:

    • ❌ Coffee
    • ❌ Alcoholic drinks
    • ❌ Coca Cola
    • ❌ Hot tea
    • ❌ Chai lattes
    • ✅ Sprite, other non-caffeinated soft drinks
    • ✅ Hot Chocolate
    • ✅ Kombucha
    • ✅ Energy drinks???
    • ✅ Herbal Tea (even while hot, but mostly if you're sick as a home remedy)

Most of the focus is interpreted as "contains caffeine and/or alcohol" but the wording is vague enough that it leaves for a lot of weird wiggle room people try to argue (based on convenience usually). It's quite silly

Cyberpunk is considered a sub genre of sci-fi because a bunch of people got together and said that's what it is. Doesn't make it a 100% hard set rule. You just like putting things in boxes. A piece of creative work is what it contains, not whatever categories you shove it into.

I accept that the intersubjective framework of literary genres exists, but have my disagreements with it. You can do that. It doesn't make you wrong, just unpopular.

Advertising is like the Kudzu vine: neat and potentially useful if maintained responsibly, but beyond capable of growing out of control and strangling the very landscape if you don't constantly keep it in check. I think, for instance, that a podcast or over-the-air show running an ad-read with an affiliate link is fine for the most part, as long as it's relatively unobtrusive and doesn't put limitations on what the content would otherwise go over.

The problem is that there needs to be a reset of advertiser expectations. Right now, they expect the return on investment that comes from hyper-specific and invasive data, and I don't think you can get that same level of effectiveness without it. The current advertising model is entrenched, and the parasitic roots have eroded the foundation. Those roots will always be parasitic because that's the nature of advertising, and the profit motive in general when unchecked.

You're being prescriptive and not descriptive with the definitions. Superficially it is the case, and people have created a neat little categorical hierarchy you can keep pointing back to, but I'm telling you that a lot of cyberpunk creative work is sci-fi in the same way that people say Star Wars is sci-fi (it's a space opera, at least the movies are)

Science fiction usually carries with it a desire to rationalize and explain the technology it's built upon, to try and paint a world plausible from a scientific standpoint. You see this a lot with the technobabble in Star Trek.

Cyberpunk has a lot of overlap with science fiction, but usually dives more into the social commentary on society and capitalism, using the technology within as a vehicle to amplify those criticisms. Some cyberpunk works seek to explain their technology and make it seem grounded in the same way sci-fi does, but that is usually secondary to the social and political themes.

  • I use Firefox whenever I can. On first install of the browser I usually end up following a hardening guide which includes stuff like blocking cross site cookies, setting a few things in about:config to disable Pocket/etc, and installing uBlock Origin. I've taken what I consider a relatively balanced approach, I don't use anything like noScript, uMatrix, etc that ultimately just cost a lot of time fiddling to get the 10th website of the week working. I've been more or less fine browsing the web this way for years, but around the start of 2024 I've started seeing way more "Access Denied" pages than I used to. I think part of it is Cloudflare or similar, but I don't know exactly what's changed or what's triggering it to occur. It usually goes away and I can re access the site in 10-30 minutes as usual, but I've had it occur in really weird instances, such as trying to change my Minecraft skin and getting blocked by the website. The server block often goes away immediately if I switch my user agent, so I know that it has something to do with how I've got everything set up. Not sure what anyone else's experience with this has been. I'd like to hear some of your thoughts and tips

To summarize for anyone who would rather not watch the video, there are always exactly 4 "events" in a wildwood instance. While any specific event is randomly selected, their locations are always around the far North, South, East, and West of the area. If you can find two events, especially if they're perfectly horizontal or vertical from each other, it becomes much easier to find a third and possibly fourth. After you find the first, all you have to do is look for the remaining spots of the 'diamond', following wisp trails to make an educated guess. I thought this was pretty useful information, especially if you're trying to maximize wisp collection to juice your maps or find more nameless creatures to complete quests.

Hi everyone! I decided to create this sub as an alternative to other Path of Exile discussion boards on Lemmy, since most of them were pretty dead (not that another sub on another instance will fix that, but why not ok?) There was also a weirdly long propagation time for posts of mine to show up on the other instance's board, so I'm hoping that won't be as much of an issue with this one here. For now I've created the sub icon (and I guess this welcome message too). Any questions about the game are welcome! I'm not exactly an expert or anything but I've gotten through most non-uber endgame content and am part of a guild that is also very knowledgeable about the game. Thanks for reading!
