... and I'm getting notifications about replies I saw a week ago.
This is something that I couldn't find an obvious setting for, but someone pointed out that the descriptions are different on different instances. This post has a German (?) description [on midwest.social](https://midwest.social/comment/11585426), but [on programming.dev](https://programming.dev/post/17954923) it's in English. In my settings: - Interface language is Browser Default. - Languages has Undetermined and English selected All other descriptions on posts are in English, only youtube seems to be different.
Has anyone else been experiencing performance problems for the last few weeks? About half my requests time out when using Jerboa. The site on desktop is a little better but Lemmy still performs pretty poorly compared to how it has in the past. Is this an instance issue or an issue with Lemmy itself?
I can't do much at the moment from my home in Ohio, but just wanted you all to know we stand with you and are thinking about you. Also, fuck the police. Free Palestine!
Hey folks, got off Reddit early last year but have been procrastinating on finding a replacement. Finally got around to joining the LemmyBinVerse and figured I would join a more-regional server. Big fan of cheese, the outdoors, and cheese outdoors. Dry, sarcastic humor is a love language. Shitposts are great, in moderation. I had an ICQ but I don’t remember my number. I guess that’s all for now.
Depressing to see 196 get flooded with neoliberals, libertarians, and apolitical assholes standing against Palestine. Seems like most of them are coming from lemmy.world but still
Right now to avoid troll posts only mods can post. If you are interested in being a mod let me know. If you just want to post something let me know as well and I'll post it for you.

Upgraded to 0.19.1 and checked lemmy.ml as an example and everything is coming over from both sides.
Noticing some federation issues with lemmy.ml for example. Investigating... Update: supposedly, there is a fix for the 0.19 federation issues we're currently experiencing in a new RC image. I'll try upgrading later today.
Please let me know of any issues you may experience. Right now I just occasionally see some toast errors pop up.
Are we going to defederate right away, see over time, or stay federated?
There are reports of spam coming from specific users on lemmy.blahaj.zone. I stumbled across some very unpleasant NSFL content on an unrelated post. I wouldn't reccomend it, but you could check soot@lemmy.blahaj.zone's profile for an example if it hasn't been taken down yet. It may be worth temporarily blocking that instance until they get a handle on the situation.
We finally got 'em! 🦀🦀🦀🦀
Following this comment: https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/issues/4039#issuecomment-1773482259 I updated the timestamps in the instance table of midwest.social's database. We'll see if that fixes anything. Fingers crossed. For example, the `updated` timestamp column for lemmy.world was sometime on 10-30-23.
In the past several days, I've noticed that comments that I make on this instance to cross-instance communities started to take up to several hours to propagate to the community's home instance, and now do not seem to propagate at all. I've noticed the issue on lemmy.world, lemmynsfw.com, and lemmy.ml. Several comments I made today in a programming.dev community went through more or less instantly, though. Has anyone else noticed this?
If you go to c/homeimprovement@lemmy.world through midwest.social, it shows fewer subscribers in the sidebar than if you go straight to lemmy.world (https://midwest.social/c/homeimprovement@lemmy.world vs https://lemmy.world/c/homeimprovement). Also, there are posts that only show up when you look at c/homeimprovement@lemmy.world through the midwest.social instance, and are missing from the lemmy.world instance. For example, this post: https://midwest.social/post/4242666 is nonexistent if you look at the homepage on lemmy.world: https://lemmy.world/c/homeimprovement. However, you can see it from the homepage on midwest.social: https://midwest.social/c/homeimprovement@lemmy.world.
My instance seems to be having issues federating content. Trying to test this out.
In the last couple of days, none of the comments I've made to kbin.social posts seem to be making their way over to that server. Are there any known issues with federating with them?
Hello beautiful people, Today I had the pleasure of working with [@Illecors@lemmy.cafe](https://lemmy.cafe/u/Illecors) to set up midwest.social's email properly. HUGE shout out to them! Gmail and other emails should now work with this instance's email notifications instead of bouncing. Update: a small issue has been found with the email server that's causing some of the emails to not get delivered. Will take a couple of hours to be fixed. Hang tight. 2nd update: issue has been resolved.
(Feel free to remove if not allowed) I may be preaching to the choir , but I just wanted to say THANK YOU to the instance moderators and owners. I really appreciate the welcoming attitude that a lot of our threads hold. I really like the freedom of expression we can have, as well as the disagrements that have helped broaden my worldview. I love that this is slightly more currated to our location in the world, it really helps connect local news with the people that might miss it if you're only scrolling the large social media networks or countrywide news outlets. I am definitely biased and might be unaware of some problems, but to me the content and members here actually make me want to participate in the conversation. So uh... yeah. Thank you.
I'm getting an error when I try to attach an image to posts. Am I just too prolific and there's a cool down? `{"data":{"error":"rate_limit_error"},"state":"success"}`
Ignoring fascists and other bad actors does not stop them from doing bad things and/or radicalizing others. This is a common complaint I see in online communities, and it's a flawed strategy that is a good way to lose ground to bad actors. For the libs: I understand that hearing about current events involving bad actors that upset you may be annoying but please don't report them for that reason. For the fascists: kill yourselves. You know what you're doing. Nobody can tell what your motivation is online but the affect is still the same. [Here](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wCl33v5969M) is a video essay that explains why ignoring fascists doesn't work. The entire alt-right playbook is worth a watch btw. Thank you for coming to my ted talk.
I didn't know where else to post it, sorry. Hopefully the Canadians see this too. We should make sure to have a whole server post on this every year.
I'm not sure if it's just the larger instances getting the brunt of it, or if we've been quietly handling it in the background, but I just wanted to float the question in case it's something you have to be actively looking out for. I would hate for this community to get taken down due to bad actors elsewhere.
Just an FYI, I generally ignore any reports that aren't hate speech or severe incivility. As far as spam goes as long as it's not on my server I ignore it unless it's done by one user and I can remove all their content with a few clicks. It would be cool if one could choose where the report goes.
**Hexbear users: Please avoid commenting on this thread!** This sub is for midwest.social users / announcements. Y'all's participation in yesterday's thread, while understandable, made it really really hard for me to see what other users on my instance thought. Thanks! The other thread got locked before I could jump in and voice my opinion as a midwest.social user lol. Please don't defederate from Hexbear! I'm a US-based leftist who's sometimes uncomfortable with realllllyyyyy extreme leftists. But after looking through Hexbear's content with an *extraordinarily* fine-toothed comb I failed to find anything that other user was talking about. It seems like a pretty standard leftist instance and has some great communities I'm enjoying following here. [/c/urbanism@hexbear.net](https://midwest.social/c/urbanism@hexbear.net), [/c/antifascism@hexbear.net](https://midwest.social/c/antifascism@hexbear.net), and [/c/politics@hexbear.net](https://midwest.social/c/politics@hexbear.net) are just a few of the really great communities I've found over there. Obviously some of the communities could be uncomfortable for liberals lmao, but they can always block offending users or communities and hide them if they really want to. Scrolling through Hexbear I fail to see any communities that are anywhere near the level of 'extremism' of Lemmygrad, but even Lemmygrad I don't have much of a problem with lol. However I do think it'd be useful to have a private sub just for discussion with users here. I think what happened yesterday was somehow the thread here ended up trending on Hexbear, and Hexbear users responded as if it was just another post on their platform. It'd be useful if there was a way to restrict discussion on this sub to just users of midwest.social so that I can see what y'all think!
Putting this here since it's this instance's most subscribed community. I miss me some TPUSA memes. Was wondering if the subreddit successfully migrated somewhere on the Fediverse.
Is there a particular reason why this instance isn't federated with us? Just wondering.
Has anyone else noticed how prevalent Hexbear posters have suddenly become? Maybe sometime last week I noticed nearly every political post had at least one long thread of Hexbear users that do nothing but repeat CCP talking points while waving anyway anything even remotely reliable as Western propaganda. That or getting all excited about trolled libs. The way they tell it, you'd think everything from DW, to Fox, to Propublica, to straight up AP News articles, are all written by the same people. Not to mention, their info on the [Fediverse observer](https://lemmy.fediverse.observer/list) is either straight up wrong or there's some serious botting going on. According to that, the instance is less than a month old, yet somehow they already have one of the largest, most active userbases, along with far and away the most comments of any instance. Seems to me like Lemmygrad on steroids. Considering we defederated from them, seems like a no-brainer to block Hexbear as well. So glad this thread could become such a perfect microcosm of why we need to defederate.
After seeing some of the comments coming from it I've added it to our blocklist. For the record: the only good transphobe is a dead transphobe. Have a good day everyone!
Recently it has come to my attention that the instance where my account is located rammy.site has been taken over by right wing bigots from the site exploding-heads they have created many hateful communities and have started posting transphobic content and climate denial. There's also quite a bit of community spam on here. I very strongly advocate that the admins of this instance defederate from rammy.site as soon as humanly possible to stop the spread of their toxic shit to other instances.
July 28th is [System Administrator Appreciation Day](https://sysadminday.com/)! Thank you to our admins: @seahorse @simsym @JackFromWisconsin @wicked82 @InevitableWaffles If you've been enjoying using this service and are able, consider clicking the post link & donating to help pay the bills for the site.
Deleted something I shouldn't have. I learned my lesson, but I had to revert to a backup that was about 3 days old. My bad.
