Hilarious Chaos Announcements

Hey everyone, I’ve just launched a new Hilarious Chaos Lemmy user group chatroom on Element (Matrix)! This one's for EVERYONE, so whether you’re on our instance or not, you’re welcome to join the madness. However, it's still private, so to hop in, just DM me for the invite code, and you’re good to go! Now, for clarity: if you’ve heard about the other chatroom, that’s an exclusive space reserved for trusted, long-time Hilarious Chaos veterans. But this new room? It’s open to ALL—newbies, lurkers, and chaos junkies alike. Bring your best jokes, wild ideas, or just sit back and enjoy the mayhem. Hope to See you there!

9 times out of 10 it's because you didn't read this: ![](https://lemm.ee/api/v3/image_proxy?url=https%3A%2F%2Fhilariouschaos.com%2Fpictrs%2Fimage%2F83e55372-4e8a-43f5-be25-9df3d21e65ef.webp) The only thing that you should write in that box is "I agree", like in the example above. If you don't, your application will be rejected as the text says. I'm making this post as I'm aware that Lemmy does not convey the reason for rejection and some of you may be confused as to why we're not letting you in.

Reason for this post: If you don't know already, federation isn't *as automatic* as it's appears/designed. Even ***IF*** other instances are linked to your instance, number one, you might not even know that. Therefore you won't have them on your allow list. Number two, just because other instances are linked to you ***and then you put them on your allow list*** posts and communities still ***are not federated between y'all*** ***You HAVE to create an account on THEIR instance and then add communities from your home instance, that you want to show on their instance*** Then You need to do the same on your home instance. By copying the communities from the other instance and finding and subscribing while on your home instance account. Otherwise both instances are connected yes, but can't see anything posted from one another. I don't know why it's like that. But this post is to inform you that I'm gradually going through the join lemmy page and looking at each instances allow and block list. I'm putting instances that have us on their linked/allow list in my notes, and getting with splinter to see if they're good and ok to also link up with. If they are, They are being added to our link and allow list. However you'll need to follow the steps above so that we can successfully federate. ***I AM ALSO DOING THIS AS WELL*** you don't have to if you don't want to. I'm only letting y'all know this because if you want to hurry up this process in case there is content from other instances we are linked to that you really want to interact with so you don't have to wait on me for that to happen. Is what I mean. We've added 9 instances I found that are connected to us and I've added some non political communities from them that I found interesting and subed from my hc account. I've made accounts on their instances to do the other step of the federation but idk what's going on with my email. I'm not getting their confirm email email. Please have a look at our allow list guys so you can sub to any communities you find interesting from them. Go to Hilariouschaos.com home page scroll all the way down to the bottom and click 'instances' ![](https://lemm.ee/api/v3/image_proxy?url=https%3A%2F%2Fhilariouschaos.com%2Fpictrs%2Fimage%2F34dc463d-b42a-45b3-a3a4-301e41bd8616.webp) You'll see this. These are all the instances we're federated with. Click any of them you find interesting and copy their community link that starts with the ! Search on HC then sub from their. ![](https://lemm.ee/api/v3/image_proxy?url=https%3A%2F%2Fhilariouschaos.com%2Fpictrs%2Fimage%2F1c257cbe-4fb4-4d49-b765-b7fa7706deb3.webp)

This only applies to users in hilariouschaos.com instance and who are **active daily** (However I'm open if you *will be more active if made a mod to communities you want to be a mod for*) Are there any communities we currently have, that you ***are not a mod in*** but would like to be ? Not being a mod to a community just for the sake of being a mod, but communities you actively use or would actively use if you were a mod to those communities is what I am saying. If you are a daily active user or would be more active if appointed mod to communities you like/want, let me know through DM please so I can appoint you as a mod. We have a lot of communities which is challenging to keep up with so if any of yall are interested I don't see why not. Let me know. - Alice

Hey everyone! Nothing bad just incase you don't know, you can make communities private or public now. Private only shows locally on our instance Public will show to who we are federated with Please check out the 1.9.4 recent lemmy update on github for direct information about it. My break down is an assumption as to how it works. Thank you

There are a few things to do so this one might take a couple of hours to complete, during which HC will not be available. Edit: Maintenance done and Lemmy updated to the latest version, let me know if you notice anything funky.

I wanted to thank all of our users who decided to join our Instance and who post and comment and vote. We're happy and honored y'all chose us and we appreciate you being here and all you have to offer even if you're just a lurker. I would like to give a special thanks to @Lovstuhagen and @airrow who consistently post helping keep this instance alive. I've been taking a break from lemmy for a little while (still checking reports, applications and dms just not posting or commenting) And it means alot to me that y'all are active in that regard. I greatly appreciate your activity here. It keeps things going and it made me feel 'ok' enough to take a bit of a break. I always notice y'all's posts, upvote them and comment when I feel I've got something to add. Even when I don't I still notice them. Splinter and I are both very appreciative. So thank you so much. ❤️

Not sure if it's needed, but I have setup an *invite only* matrix chat if anyone is interested please let me know and I'll send you an invite. Or you can dm me your matrix ID so I can invite you that way. Thanks. Please note: This is only for hilariouschaos.com instance users.

Hey guys, I want to revist this to see if any of you have changed yalls minds. I personally want down votes turned off. It's discouraging, annoying, PETTY, and I just honestly see it more as a little 'Fuck you' button, for the majority of other instances users. I don't want any of you being treated that way. I see no benefit having them on. If you've seen my comment on our first post about this, you know why I say that. My reasoning is here https://hilariouschaos.com/comment/11211 Original post https://hilariouschaos.com/post/16681 I am not the only one who feels this way, as it's been brought up too me a few times. So I need to address it. Here's what I would like to do. First and foremost, I want everyone to vote what they want in the comments if you could please. HOWEVER. I'd like to turn them off *temporarily* yall can give me a time frame for how long that's ok with you. Then, we'll revist this again, to see how everyone feels having both experiences with them off and with them on and what we should choose for the long run. I have kinda another idea it's nothing special, but I just don't want yall to freak out thinking it'll be permanent. I just think we need to turn thrum off, at least for a little while temporarily. Thank you, Please let me know. Alice.

We've added a few more instances to the federation list, including the likes of lemmy.world - let's see how we go. So far federation hasn't been bad, so I am cautiously optimistic. Instances added: - lemmy.world - feddit.de - midwest.social - feddit.uk - lemmy.eco.br - feddit.dk - lemmus.org - sopuli.xyz - eviltoast.org - slrpnk.net - monyet.cc - linux.community - lemmy.pt - lemmy.kde.social - suppo.fi - lemmy.radio - scribe.disroot.org - feddit.nl - feddit.cl - lemmy.tedomum.net - feddit.it - sub.wetshaving.social - awful.systems - rblind.com - szmer.info - tucson.social We're just looking for more people to talk to and Lemmy gives users the ability to block entire instances, so in theory there should be no need for anyone to defederate us. Some people will anyway but whatever: https://defed.xyz/check?name=hilariouschaos.com&software=lemmy

As some of you are aware, one member is no longer with us. Posting other users information is not cool, that's why they are no longer here. I want to take a quick moment to emphasize how important transparency is to me in our community. While I'm more than willing to discuss recent events openly, I don't want unnecessary drama. If anyone has questions or wants to know more about recent actions, please feel free to direct message me privately. Your trust and understanding mean a lot to me, and I'm always here to address any concerns you may have. Thanks for your understanding, and I'm sorry for this unfortunate news. Alice

There are a few opinions floating around on either or not downvotes should be disabled. I'm interested to see what everyone thinks and if there's a majority consensus one way or the other. So please reply in this thread with your preference and why. You can also debate it in the comments. --- Edit 23-03-2024 - Thanks everyone for your feedback. It looks like opinions are split on this, with good arguments made on either side. As downvotes aren't currently a big issue, we'll leave them as they are and we can revisit this again in future if things change.

For context: https://hilariouschaos.com/post/2268 It's done, feel free to start subbing to some external communities, and let's keep the conversation going on which instances we should link to. Instances only see federated content from external communities that have at least one subscriber on the instance. If you want our content to propagate to a certain instance, then please sign up with them and start subbing to some of our communities - I've been doing this for the larger ones.

I know all of us would be happy to have more people to interact with on content. The idea of limited federation came up a bit recently too, and I mentioned that we are open to it. The reasons we haven't been federated have nothing to do with not wanting to open up to the rest of the Fediverse, and everything to do with the drama that comes with federation. Specifically, we don't want the dodgy porn that other instances get bombed with, the endless political fanatics who poison every topic, the admins who want to impose their views on you, the constant screeching and demonizing, etc. The overwhelming majority of all Fediverse content is hot garbage, and having to store that bloat for nothing is also a huge turn-off. On the other hand, I think we can all agree that it would be nice to have more people to talk shit with, and federation is an easy(er) way to achieve that. Our current thinking is that we'd like to selectively federate with instances who tick off a few requirements: 1. No porn or loli shit or pedo apologists or anything like that 2. They require registration applications (this one's about spam) 3. Their admins aren't missing in action (also about spam) 4. Their rules don't sound like something Stalin would've come up with The requirements above are just a way of me saying I don't have time to deal with this shit if it became high drama and high maintenance, so I'd like to avoid that if possible. I really don't care about political lean or anything like that. Alice compiled an initial list: - https://aussie.zone - https://lemmy.sdf.org - https://programming.dev - https://mander.xyz - https://monero.town - https://lemmy.zip - https://reddthat.com - https://feddit.ch - https://lemm.ee - https://lemmy.nz - https://dmv.social - https://iusearchlinux.fyi - https://fanaticus.social - https://lemmy.basedcount.com/ - https://donky.social/ - https://links.hackliberty.org/ - https://lotide.fbxl.net What are your thoughts? There's been a bit of a stir over this post: https://sh.itjust.works/post/13512126 I thought I would explain some things about Lemmy in general and HC in particular, for better or worse. ### About this exploit 1. We are NOT affected by this particular bug. It only affects Lemmy 0.18.5, at the time of that post we were on 0.19.2 and I have just upgraded us to 0.19.3, which was released a few days ago. In general I keep close tabs on Lemmy development and we are always on the latest version within a couple of days. 2. Even if we had been affected, you would have to be a registered user on HC to even attempt to exploit it, and this particular bug involved spamming the Report feature. It would've been really obvious to Alice or I had anyone tried, since we get notified of all reports. ### About Lemmy security in general Lemmy is still early in its development, things are changing rapidly and there have been a number of rather serious security bugs over the past year. This is not the first time and it won't be the last time something like this comes up. I keep an eye on Lemmy development and upgrade us to the latest version soon after it is released. This is the main thing I can do to make sure we limit our exposure to any potential Lemmy exploits. We are also not federated and as of now we're a pretty small tight knit group. This vastly reduces our risk from any exploits, since typically exploits require you to be a registered user. **Lastly, if there was ever a serious exploit that affected us, you will hear from me.** ### About Lemmy private messages Lemmy private messages exist as unencrypted text inside of the Lemmy database. Lemmy admins in general CAN'T view or delete your private messages through the Lemmy admin interface, there is simply no option for it. The server admin (me in this example) has access to the database directly and could run a query to view or delete private messages. In practical terms, this means the only person here who could do that is me. As I said before, I really don't care to view the dick pics you send to each other, but you should keep in mind that I could. In general you should never use Lemmy private messages for anything that could hurt you if they ever became public. There are some scenarios in which that data could end up in other people's hands, such as: - Through some funky Lemmy exploit we don't know about yet - If someone hacks the server itself (extremely unlikely but you never know) - If someone shows up at my door with a warrant. Overall though, Lemmy private messages aren't less secure than those of any other similar service you use, even the likes of Reddit, Twitter, etc. There is nothing to panic over, just use common sense. I'm happy to answer questions on any of this, feel free to ask them here.

We also have a PeerTube instance: https://videos.hilariouschaos.com I'm happy to give you access to it if you want to use it to share your creations. As a general rule, this should be original content you made, not anything copyrighted. If you're interested then just sign up at https://videos.hilariouschaos.com and send me a DM here to let me know it's you.

When creating new communities, please use all caps in the display name only. Example: New Community And add an image icon. You don't need to add a banner unless you want to. I do get excited when yall make communities too. Makes me happy. :'D Thank you all

Giving these a shout-out because the jerboah app doesn't display new communities for a little while. For some reason. I barely saw them now in boost. https://hilariouschaos.com/c/health https://hilariouschaos.com/c/math There's also a science community I thought I copied the link for.
